Here's a great little project for converting a long coat into a pirate coat. This would also be a great navy officer coat, or even a base for some sweet steampunk fashion.

Sewing is the backbone of the Wardrobe department and the basic stitches you learned to sew at home or school are the same ones we use to create professional costumes. If you never learned to sew, it's never too late. Most sewing machine shops offer free sewing machine lessons when you buy a machine. You may have to pay a nominal fee for the lessons if you don't buy one there. Or, you may know someone who can teach you the basic stitches while making a skirt or pair of shorts.
